Sarah's Song

A Tribute to a Beloved Friend

Memories of Sarah

My baby girl Sarah had the cutest little "heart shaped" head, she came to me from a relative of mine that adopted her from a "no kill shelter". She went from there to a home where she was put on a 6 foot tie chain to a pine tree, where all the mosquitoes and bugs bit her all the time she had a dog house but no friends, no kids, no one to kiss and love on. She stayed that way for 2 years plus...my daughter finally could not stand it any more so she told them she wanted her, she took her and brought her home for her husband to build a fence for her to play in. That couldn't be done right away so she came across the street to stay with me and my 8 babies.
That was the real beginning of Sarah's life...at over 3 years old she finally had a life and 8 brothers and sisters to play with on 10 acres of land to run and play and chase squirrels and play in the pond. She and Sadie her best friend would "escape" out of the yard to go down to the neighbors house and look at the horses and roll in the hay.....I could always tell when they had snuck out, they came home smelling like horse poop! Yuk...baths for both of them.
Well at the beginning of February 2011, Sarah began to lose weight and a little of her pep, I looked her over carefully to make sure nothing had bit her, I looked in her mouth and saw her gums were white and her tongue was very pale, I took her to my vet the next morning. He took a good look at everything and had the nurse do a fecal, and a blood test, the blood looked watery like cherry Kool-Aid. He told me she had heartworms very bad. He gave me doxycycline and iron medicine to give her two times a day for 2 weeks. She started drinking gallons of water. I was feeding her lightly cooked ground beef, strips of steak, ham, hot dogs, lunch meat and made her a pot of stew. She ate the first week and a few days, then began to turn her head away from me when i tried to feed her, a she would follow me with her eyes all the time. I would wrap her in her blanket and hold her like a baby and slept with her a few nights, she started moaning a lot. I knew she was getting tired, I started crying and trying to figure out what to do, I loved her and didn't want her to go but I could not stand the pain in her eyes and voice. I decided on February 15th, 2011 to take her back to the vet she had only seen once in her life to give her the shot that took her life and all of her pain away....yet broke my heart for the little red dog with the heart shaped head and a heart big enough to keeping on loving Humans after all she had been through. Thank You Sarah for loving Me so much...I will always Love and Miss You Girl!
